Qinghai Lake & Chaka Salt Lake private tour
Qinghai Lake, 'Tso Ngonpo' in Tibetan, is China's largest inland saltwater lake. In July the rapeseed fields turn gold against the blue water. Chaka Salt Lake, the 'mirror of the sky', reflects the clouds on a shallow brine layer. Add Kumbum Monastery near Xining and five days covers the essentials.

What you see along the way.
One of the six great Gelug monasteries. Don't miss the butter sculptures, murals and appliqué thangka.
Stay by the shore and walk out to the water at dawn — no early driving needed.
In July the gold fields run straight down to the lake. Outside July the grassland and snow peaks hold their own.
Enter at first light and walk the boardwalk into the water. Bring shoe covers — brine ruins leather.
Mojiajie and Shuijingxiang: hand-pulled lamb, liangpi and sweet fermented oats in one street.

Questions about Qinghai Lake & Chaka Salt Lake.
When is the best time to visit Qinghai Lake?
June to September. July has the fullest rapeseed bloom but the biggest crowds; June and September offer good weather with fewer people and are what we usually recommend. In winter the lake freezes, which is striking but can drop below -20°C.
When should I visit Chaka Salt Lake?
At opening time in the morning or just before dusk. Midday light is harsh and the reflection is actually weaker, plus it is busiest. Skip it on rainy days — the mirror effect disappears.
Is five days too rushed?
Driving is only two to four hours a day, so it is not rushed. If you want it easier, take the six-day version and add Guide Danxia or a second night by the lake.
Will it be cold by the lake?
The lake sits at 3,196 m, so mornings and evenings are cold — even in July it can be 5–10°C at night. Bring a jacket; hotel rooms are heated.
