Dunhuang & the Silk Road private tour
At the western end of the Hexi Corridor, Dunhuang was the Han and Tang gateway to the Western Regions. The Mogao Caves hold murals and sculpture from the 4th to 14th centuries; Crescent Lake sits in a spring-fed hollow among the dunes. Further west lie Yumen Pass and the Yardang 'ghost city'. The point of this route is to slow down.

Questions about Dunhuang & the Silk Road.
How far ahead should I book Mogao Caves?
In peak season (July, August and the National Day holiday) tickets often sell out a month ahead. We book the standard caves the moment your itinerary is confirmed; if they are gone we arrange the emergency ticket and tell you in advance.
Is Dunhuang too hot in summer?
Daytime can exceed 35°C in July and August, but it is dry and breezy, which feels easier than southern China. We go out in the morning and late afternoon and rest at the hotel at midday.
How far are Yumen Pass and the Yardang landforms?
Both are west of Dunhuang, about five to six hours of driving round trip, which is why we give them a full day. The road is good but there is no shade, so bring water and a hat.
Can this connect to the Grand Loop?
Yes. Dunhuang is a stop on the Grand Loop, and we can link these six days seamlessly to Zhangye and Xining to make a ten-day-plus circuit.
